Topic: An Unfolding Journey: Rephotography and the Challenger Expedition

Considering photographing as an implicitly collaborative act, Gary McLeod is a British photographer who creates opportunities for others to contribute explicitly to a process of knowledge-making. First encountering in 2006 a set of photographs made during the Challenger expedition (a 19th Century British mission to circumnavigate the world and advance scientific knowledge of its oceans), contemporary residents were invited to join in collectively rephotographing sites where the original pictures were taken. That prompted a seven-year journey, which not only opened up his practice to others’ voices/contributions, but also highlighted critical issues of authorship and literacy in contemporary uses of photography. Following an overview of rephotography as a genre and a set of common visual practices, this talk tells of a photographic journey into uncertainty and provides a glimpse of where photography can/cannot go. Holding a PhD in Photography from London College of Communication, Gary currently lives in Tokyo and works everywhere else.

Title: The Fractured Timeline – From micro-editing to real-time visual sampling

Let’s look at the moving image from the perspective of sampled sound. A new kind of visual language has emerged through micro-editing and visual sampling. This language is an autonomous form that we can observe in different media and genres: From experimental filmmaking to YouTube phenomena, from video-art to music clips. What’s the nature of this aesthetic? What happens when video becomes a medium of spontaneous expression through interactivity?

About the artist:
Max Neupert is a visual artist, working at the intersections of auditive and visual media, perspective and view, mapping and censorship. His works have been acquired by the collections of the German Ministry for Environment, the International Airport Montreal and the Museum of Civilisation Quebec. From 2008 to 2013 he was teaching at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His investigation in “Satellite Astrology” has been presented at the ISEA 2010 and was exhibited in Sydney and Madrid. In 2011 he initiated and hosted the 4th international Pure Data convention in Weimar, a week long venue with conference, exhibition, workshops and concerts which attracted 140 people from 26 countries. He designed the Interactive Performance Platform in the Digital Bauhaus Lab and taught a telematic class between Bauhaus-Universität and UCSD. Max currently is a PhD candidate at the Bauhaus-Universität and researches on video imagery as sampling material in a musical context. Since 2013 he is professor at the Yeungnam University in Korea.

Topic: On Film between Painting and Sculpture

The Berlin-based artist Robert Seidel dissolves boundaries of genre by extending the clarity of the drawing – through the flow of painting, the spatiality of sculpture and temporal elements – into an abstract-film narrative. Besides the silver screen, conceptual, as well as real visual projection surfaces include architectural and sculptural forms.

The material for these medial interlacings frequently originates in nature and in the abstract gaze of science on nature, for example in the form of MRI images. Through subsequent deconstruction with digital tools, it becomes possible – before the eyes of the recipient – to condense these structures into a rhizomatic memory structure independent from physical space and linear time. The filmic image conserves the whole creation process in abstract-organic tableaux vivants. In the process, temporal sequences or movements become not only imagined – as frequently attempted in the history of drawing and painting – but actually represented.

Examples include the visualization of split seconds of a car crash (_grau, Bauhaus University Weimar, 2004); the painterly reinterpretation of biological processes in a façade-based projection (processes: living paintings, Phyletic Museum Jena, 2008); a virtual sculpture made of city fragments (vellum, Art Center Nabi Seoul, 2009); environmental laser drawings (magnitude, Epicenter Projects, 2015), projection-based sculptures (chiral, MOCA Taipeh, 2011 and grapheme, Museum Wiesbaden 2013) as well as a water-fountain-projections (advection, Lichtsicht-Biennale, 2013) and experimental films (scrape, 2011 and vitreous, 2015).

About the speaker:
Robert Seidel (*1977) began his studies in biology before transferring to the Bauhaus University Weimar to complete his degree in media design. His projections, installations and experimental films have been shown in numerous international festivals, as well as at galleries and museums such as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, ZKM Karlsruhe, Art Center Nabi Seoul, Museum of Image and Sound São Paulo and MOCA Taipei. His works have been honoured with various prizes, including the KunstFilmBiennale Cologne Honorary Award and Prize for Best Experimental Film at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. In his work Seidel is interested in pushing the boundaries of abstracted beauty through cinematographic approaches, as well as ones drawn from science. By the organic interplay of various structural, spatial and temporal concepts, he creates a continuously evolving complexity. Out of this multifaceted perspective emerges a narrative skeleton, through which viewers connects to the artwork on an evolutionary-derived and phylogenetic-fixated symbolic level. Seidel lives and works in Berlin and Jena as artist, filmmaker and curator.

Suppose you know After Effects, Maya, Frame by frame hand drawn, or you are really good at stop-motion, you may still find it hard to make advance of your animated film. ‘This talk will give you an overall insight from a personal perspective of story-telling and directing in animation by Lilian Fu, who has been working as animation director in London for several years. You will find this talk useful with some career advice and some interesting experience sharing.’

About the Speaker:
Since graduating from the School of Creative Media in City University of Hong Kong in 2008, Lilian Fu has been an active animator with 10 years animating experience behind her. She has won several awards in competitions and international film festivals including IFVA. Her latest documentary animation was selected for various festivals including LIDF, BIG SKY Documentary Film Festival 2013 and It’s All True –International Documentary Film Festival 2012. She has had two short films commissioned for television broadcast by RTHK.

After graduates from the animation directing MA at the National Film and Television School, she is keen to build on her experience through working on feature, television and commercial animation.

About the artist:

Nadim Abbas (born 1980, Hong Kong) is a Hong Kong installation artist. Abbas received his BFA from London’s Chelsea College of Art & Design and MPhil from the University of Hong Kong Department of Comparative Literature. He teaches at the City University Hong Kong School of Creative Media and the Hong Kong Art School/ RMIT University.
Abbas’s practice includes heavily-researched installation and sculptural works that play on the psychological patterns of everyday objects and kitsch. His work draws thematic inspiration from literature, science and psychology. His first solo solo was the “Cataract” at Experimenta, on 2010. Other works included are “Marine Lover” at ART HK 11, and a collaboration with Saamlung Gallery on a project for the 2012 Hong Kong International Art Fair. For Art Basel Hong Kong in 2014, Abbas was invited by Absolut to collaborate on an “art bar”, an art installation doubling as a pop up bar during Art Basel fairs around the world. Abbas’ concept called “Apocalypse Postponed” drew inspiration from Science Fiction films, 20th century military architecture and defensive plans such as The Atlantic Wall and the Swiss National Redoubt, creating a bunker-like environment, constructed from sand bags, with blacked-out windows within a 7000 square foot space.

Guest Performance – Alejandro Rodriguez & Manuel Palenque

About the artists:
Alejandro Rodriguez is a Architect, Stage Design and art director Virtual Reality expert, Video Games content and technology developer.

He has been involved in several important public events from Argentina, including the festivities in the “Casa Rosada” presidential building of Argentina, where he designed the stage for several national festivities and co directed the technical system operations with his partner Martin Borini.

Mega show designer He has directed some of the biggest shows in Argentina including the Fiesta Nacional de La Vendimia in Mendoza, Argentina with some 1000 actors and musicians playing live in a 70 minutes show where Alejandro was the technical and art director and designed the scenario.

Manuel Palenque Buenos Aires, 1986, develops sound and visual performances, working in realtime mixing both worlds.

Studied a degree in electronic Arts (UNTREF). Is involved as an interactive designer and programmer in Expos, theatre, live shows and media installations for different artists. As a Music Producer composes electronic music for live performances and sound design for video games and film

Has given workshops and talks about these fields in different festivals and cities:Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Mendoza, Rosario, Ibiza, Barcelona, Bogotá.

Guest talk – Taihei Shii 施井泰平

The next colloquium will be on next Tuesday, the 22nd of March. We will meet at 5:00pm on the 6/F in the Future Cinema (M6094). We will have contemporary art artist Taihei Shii (施井泰平) presents some of his previous art works and his latest activity “startbahn”.

Two main subjects will be introduced in this lecture: one is about some previous art works of TAIHEI, an artist of contemporary art who has been seeking the “Art of the Internet Age,” and the other is about his latest activity “startbahn,” which is an SNS exclusive for art. “Startbahn” is a platform of art, designed specially for the Internet age. In addition to its communication system unique to an SNS, “startbahn” has a system to add artistic value to an artist’s work through buying, selling, and reviewing of it. Currently, “startbahn” system performs only in Japanese; however, we intend to start the service in English taking the occasion of this lecture. Therefore, this lecture will be the first opportunity for “startbahn” to be introduced to the world, where we will expand its service in the near future.

About the Artist:
Taihei Shii works on contemporary art by the name of TAIHEI. 1977: Born in Tokyo. Lived in the United States at the ages of 4~10, 17~18, and 25. From around 2003: After graduating from Tama Art University, Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Painting, Oil Painting Corse, TAIHEI started to present his art works featuring the “Art of the Internet Age.” Then, working in parallel with the virtual Internet­based project, TAIHEI has been introducing his art works in the real art spaces such as galleries and art museums.

In September 2014, HK Farm conducted a green takeover of Spring Workshop’s main terrace to kick off a year-long residency. Their extended program included multiple public access points to experimental, community-based urban farming, such as an Autumn Harvest Workshop, planter-building lessons, seed-bombing with student groups, documentation of both the farm and HK’s farming protagonists, a Talk to Your Plant and selfie booth, a winter discussion and finally The HK FARMers’ Almanac (2014 – 2015) created during an intensive three-day embodied knowledge book sprint.

The talk will present HK Farm’s one-residency at Spring Workshop and the HK FARMers’ Almanac, a limited-edition volume-in-a-planter, that is shared among fellow agriculturists and other nurturing souls.


About the speaker:
Michael Leung is the founder and creative director of HK Farm. He also runs HK Honey and co-founded a community-focused art and design platform called Shanghai Street Studios in Yau Ma Tei.

Michael’s interest in agriculture started when he was living in London. Visiting food markets on the weekends and cooking Sunday roasts, he slowly developed his interest in food ethics and food origin.

In the Summer of 2011, Michael moved to New York for three months to work at the world’s largest rooftop farm, Brooklyn Grange. His experience in New York inspired him to do urban agriculture in a community-based way in Hong Kong’s concrete landscape.


HK Farm is an organization of Hong Kong Farmers. Artists & designers founded in March 2012. They communicate the value of rooftop farming & the benefits of locally produced food. They work on our rooftop farm & collaborate with organizations in Hong Kong. We grow local food, curate exhibitions & design products & services relating to urban agriculture.

Spacing resonance in the topology of the voice

How does the voice “speak” from and to bodies and subjectivity? What kind of physical and relational intersubjectivity is sounded out in the interference between shifting bodies? The voice – situated in the entre-deux between body and language, at once here and elsewhere, at the centre of the chiasmus with the world – is a bodily emanation which reaches out to evoke a response, experiencing its uncanny (dis)embodied nature that sinks into the flesh. A gesture which exhibits relational dimensions within the uniqueness of being, the voice re-stages itself each time towards the other, connecting individual presence and collective usage, private bodies and the political sphere. Moving among performance studies, lacanian psychoanalysis and non-representational theory, Piersandra Di Matteo will analyse cases of the capture of the voice taken from the performing arts. With its resonating renvois between bodies, in a fracture between the utterance and what is being uttered, the phonetic organs and the fact of speaking, the paradoxical topology of the voice reveals a fluid constitution, gripped within materiality. If in recent decades the voice has been recognized as an essential material for art and research, performative space becomes a singular lens through which to examine a range of vocal and oral modalities, as a way to question out a “diapason subject” and its political nature.

About the artist:
Piersandra Di Matteo. Performing arts theorist, dramaturg and independent curator. Her theoretical research concerns postdrammatic theatre and performative formats as procedural phenomena, linguistics and contemporary philosophy. At the Department of the Arts (University of Bologna) she has been focusing her theoretical trajectory on the topology of speech, the politics and ethics of the voice. She has been part of international conferences and lectures dedicated to these topics (Montreal, London, Shanghai, Amsterdam, Bruxelles). Her essays have been published in various international magazines, art catalogues, collections of essays and multimedia projects. Her experimentation with cross-forms of performance and editorial production often involves projects in critical writing, performative writing and moments that intertwine theory and practice, understood as tactics in the configuration of other spaces for the construction of knowledge. Since 2008, she has been working closely with Romeo Castellucci as dramaturge. She is also a theoretical consultant for artists and performers. Her latest publication: Toccare il reale. L’arte di Romeo Castellucci, Cronopio, Napoli, 2015.
