Abstract:
What does a curiosity-driven career path look like? How do we navigate the boundaries between science, art, and design? In this talk, Jane reflects on her path to data visualisation. She discusses her creative motivations and process, and shares some lessons she’s learnt along the way.

About the Speaker:
Jane Pong is a data visualisation journalist at the Financial Times, where she specialises in data-related information graphics. With a unique background in both science and arts, her work attempts to bring aesthetics to scientific rigor and form to artistic introspection. Jane has previously worked as a graphics editor at South China Morning Post and Reuters. She is a co-organiser of the local chapter of Hacks/Hackers in Hong Kong, an international journalism organisation that brings together journalists and technologists who rethink the future of news and information.

Abstract:
This week’s talk will address three different aspects of Lau Kar Leung’s work. Prof. Richard Allen, Dean of the School of Creative Media, will give an introduction and overview of Lau Kar Leung’s films from a cinematic viewpoint; Mr. Hing Chao will present Leung’s Shaw Brothers era classic films from a martial arts perspective; while Prof. Jeffrey Shaw will discuss the relevance and importance of Leung’s film legacy and how it may be brought into the 21st century with new media.

Topic: Decoding Copyright

Abstract:
Copyright law, by its very basic nature, imposes a paradox. A tool for incentivizing creative activity, which at the very same time, constrains further creative endeavors of all people, other than the copyright owner. The talk will exemplify this tension through a series of visual works that build upon copyrighted materials; thus, while examining the impact of digital technologies on copyright’s paradox. Digital technologies, so goes the argument, induce the incorporation of flexible “user friendly” standards into copyright law. Yet, concurrently, digital technologies also tend to commodify culture in forms that are similar to copyright’s commodification effect.

About the Speaker:
Guy Pessach is a law professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Law. His main areas of research are Copyright Law, Comparative and International Aspects of the Creative Industries, Law & Technology and Art & Law. In addition to his position at the Hebrew University, Guy is also an affiliate fellow at the Information Society Project, Yale Law School. Guy held visiting positions at Columbia Law School, New York School of Law; Georgetown University Law School, the Center for Transnational Legal Studies, London, City University of Hong Kong, University of British Columbia and the Center for Law, Society and Pop Culture, University of Westminster. Guy has published in leading law journals in the USA, Canada, Germany, Israel and elsewhere, including: University of Southern California Law Review, Osgoode Hall Law Review, The Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, the IIC – International Review of Industrial Property and Copyright Law (Max-Planck Institute Publications), Cardozo Law Review; Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal and IDEA – The Intellectual Property Law Review.

Pursuing the path of a creative in Hong Kong? Feeling that the odds are often against you? Indeed they are, but it doesn’t mean the path isn’t worthwhile. Combining graphic design and film in her visual storytelling, Nicola will share her creative process and approach to her projects; her experience starting out on zero-budget shorts to earning the opportunity to direct her first feature length documentary She Objects, which explores traditional and new media’s influence on young girls and women in Hong Kong. Nicola will also share the lessons she has learnt from paving her career path as a Graphic Designer and Filmmaker, as well as tips to creating your own space and niche.

About the Speaker:
Nicola Fan is a Hong Kong based graphic designer and award-winning filmmaker. Her first feature length documentary She Objects, commissioned by The Women’s Foundation, was official selection for 2016 Sundance Film Festival Hong Kong. It was awarded Best Scientific & Educational Documentary at 2017 Nice International Film Festival. Recommended by Hong Kong International Film Festival, her music video The Eve was sponsored by CreateHK to be sent to film festivals worldwide from 2014—2015. She works as a Director for commercials, music videos, documentaries and short films; and a Creative/Art Director for marketing and advertising design. Her clients included Red Bull, Sunkist, Dior, Samsung, New Balance, J. P. Morgan, Time Warner.

Lisette will speak on game design and development, the international game industry, and on the importance of diversity in art, science and engineering.

About the Speaker:
Lisette Titre-Montgomery is an Art Director/Manager with over 17 years of industry experience. Her artistic skills include special effects, character modeling, and texture painting. In addition, she has also managed global art teams in Japan, China, Australia, India, and the Philippines. Lisette has contributed to some of the industry’s highest profile games, including Tiger Woods Golf, The Simpsons, Dante’s Inferno, Dance Central 3, SIMS 4, Transformers Age Of Extinction. Her most recent project is with Double Fine leading the art development for Psychonauts 2. Ms. Titre-Montgomery’s passion is being a diversity advocate for the game industry. She speaks publicly about how game based curriculums are the key to engaging today’s youth in S.T.E.A.M education and careers. Lisette has been a keynote speaker at N.A.S.A., Intel, Black Girls Code, Girls Who Code, and Soledad O’Brien’s Starfish Foundation. She has also been named One of the Most Powerful Women in Tech by Business Insider. She was most recently honored to be invited to The White House to work on initiatives to improve diversity in tech hiring and inclusion.

Topic: HK:PM. Photographing the City One Night at a Time

Abstract:
Greg Girard will be talking about his latest book of photographs, “HK:PM. Hong Kong Night Life 1974-1989”, made on early visits to Hong Kong in the 1970s and later during the 1980s when he moved to the city and eventually called it home for 15 years. HK:PM is a record of a young photographer’s nocturnal wanderings through the city, including the bars, tattoo parlours, hotels and nightclubs, and the people who inhabit them. Other scenes depict the pre-dawn emptiness of the city’s streets and alleys bathed in the artificial colours of neon rendered on film. Although the pictures were made in and of the moment, after thirty years or more they serve a new role as an unintended document of Hong Kong’s unique streetscapes, signage and built environment. They also explore many of the themes that Girard would later develop in book-length projects such as “City of Darkness” (1993) and “City of Darkness Revisited” (2014), about the Kowloon Walled City, and “Phantom Shanghai” (2007), looking at China’s largest city as it raced to make itself modern again. Girard is visiting Hong Kong for the launch of “HK:PM” and an exhibition of his photographs at PMQ in Central, Oct 27-Nov 12, sponsored by Blue Lotus Gallery.

About the Speaker:
Greg Girard is a Canadian photographer whose work has examined the social and physical transformations in Asia’s largest cities for more than three decades. Based in Shanghai between 1998 and 2011, Girard’s photographic monograph, “Phantom Shanghai” (Magenta, Toronto, 2007), with a foreword by novelist William Gibson, looks at the rapid and at times violent transition of Shanghai as the city raced to make itself modern again at the beginning of the 21st Century. “City of Darkness Revisited”, released in 2014, revives an early collaboration with co-author Ian Lambot, and updates their original book, “City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City” (Watermark, 1993). His latest books, published in 2017, are “Under Vancouver: 1972-1982”, by The Magenta Foundation; and “Hotel Okinawa” which examines the social and physical landscape of US military bases and their host communities in Okinawa, published by The Velvet Cell. Other titles include Hanoi Calling (Magenta, Toronto, 2010); and In the Near Distance (Kominek, Berlin, 2010), a book of early photographs made in Asia and North America between 1973 and 1986. His work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, The Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery and other public and private collections. Topic: Animating interactive spaces

Abstract:
The presentation will address the subject of expanded animation in the context of gaming and playful activities and will focus on co-located interactive environments in large display settings that allow the interaction between multiple actors. Inhabiting and modifying those spaces is granted via natural mapped interfaces that incorporate technologies such as position trackers and mobile devices. However, several design challenges in regard to animation arise when conceptualizing and creating experiences within the context of co-located and interactive playful environments: the issues under consideration will be the mapping of the actors’ actions, their representation within the virtual environment, as well as new forms of narration via interaction. Based on research projects and various artistic projects for the Deep Space at Ars Electronica Center, Linz novel approaches of animation in interactive spaces will be discussed.

About the Speaker:
Juergen Hagler currently works as a professor for Computer Animation and Animation Studies in the Digital Media department at the Hagenberg Campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. He became the programme coordinator for the Digital Arts master’s degree programme in 2009. Since 2014 he is the head of the research group Playful Interactive Environments with a focus on the investigation of new and natural playful forms of interaction and the use of playful mechanisms to encourage specific behavioural patterns. Since 2017 he is the director of the Ars Electronica Animation Festival and initiator and organizer of the symposium Expanded Animation.

Topic: A brief history of “video art”

Abstract:
This lecture presents the story of European time-based media, beginning with the first electronic moving images, as outcomes of the Fluxus movement in the 1960s, postulating the fusion of art and life, intimacy and public, self-realization and living. It explores early experiments in video art and its rubbing-up against TV as mass media. It continues to discuss the relation between video, film, and cinema and concludes with artists parsing the Internet.

About the Speaker:
For more than 20 years Olaf Stüber has been working in the art world as art dealer, curator, publisher and lecturer. Galerie Olaf Stüber (2001–2011) emphasized moving image works as from 2003 and was one of the very few galleries focusing on artists’ film and video at the time. In 2008, together with Ivo Wessel – a collector friend – Olaf Stüber founded an international platform for artists’ films and videos in Berlin: Videoart at Midnight. Taking place at the legendary Babylon cinema, this monthly screening series offers an in-depth insight into the current video art production of Berlin’s international art scene. After nearly 10 years and over 70 midnight shows, it has become a central forum for both renowned and upcoming promising artists working with the moving-image. As the result of an intense reflection on the art market’s convention of limitation vs. the artist’s and public’s interest of visibility in a broader range of collections, Olaf Stüber started in 2012 to publish video art in a unique edition format – the Videoart at Midnight Edition. In a series featuring about six artworks per year, with a higher number of copies than commonly acceptable in the art world, Videoart at Midnight Edition is building up a collectable contemporary omnibus of artists’ films and video art installations. It represents today a unique anthology of a medium that is gaining more and more importance within contemporary art. Furthermore, Olaf Stüber holds lectures on video and artists’ films, moderates talks and panels on the current challenges of the art market, curates film and video programs for institutions, fairs and festivals and has been member of numerous juries, all around the world. Olaf Stüber is an active member of IKT International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art.
